Use Your Words

val's musings Mar 30, 2021

You’ve all seen it in the grocery store, the playground, at school, and especially in your home.  The young child in hysterics, screaming, and crying and seemingly inconsolable.  Full of emotion, they teeter back and forth between trying to catch their breath, the sobs coming out, and their inability to express what is going on.  So the first time I heard a mother tell her impassioned child to “Use Your Words,” (the phrase many have come to use) and the child did, I was amazed.  And the more that parent stayed on message, repeating to the child to” use your words, use your words,” the more calm that child became.  That simple act ushered in by the parent allowed the child to leave that turbulent emotional state and enter into a place of peace and calm to share what was wrong.

What about you?  How many times have you just allowed yourself to whine and complain and cry or throw a tantrum or even throw something because what you wanted or needed was not happening at the moment you wanted it to?  And so you cried out, in a loud voice, with chest heaving and arms flailing and eyes all puffy, because what you thought was supposed to happen did not, or someone did or did not do something they should have or not, and there you are.  A big heap of tears and heaviness.  But the answer lies in you.

Use Your Words.

Yes, Use Your Words.

What are you trying to communicate?  What is wrong?  How can you express what it is you are feeling?

The Father says Use Your Words.

The ones that say who you are.   The ones that tell you this too shall pass.

The ones that say no matter how much this may hurt right now, trouble don’t last always.

Because your have the solution.

It’s in your mouth.

That’s right.  In. Your. Mouth.

If anyone can control his tongue, it proves that he has perfect control over himself in every other way. (James 3:2)

What are you saying out of your mouth?

For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. (Matt 12:34)

Are you letting circumstances and situations that are out of your control, control you? Are you letting the actions of others determine how your day will go?

If so, then you need to Use Your Words.

Words that say:

I am fearfully and wonderfully made. (Ps 139:14)
No weapon formed against me shall prosper. (Is 54:17)
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. (Rom 8:1)
I am the apple of his eye. (Ps 17:8)
My God shall supply all my needs according to his riches in glory. (Phil 4:19)
He will never leave me nor forsake me. (Deu 31:6)
If I confess my sin, he is faithful and just to forgive me and cleanse me from all (1 John 1:9) unrighteousness.

He loves Me! (John 3:16)

Yes – the Father loves you and wants the best for you.  But when you are crying and falling out and just so upset nothing else matters – He waits.  He waits for you to get back under control.  He puts his arms around you and holds you.  He wipes away the tears.  And once again tells you to Use Your Words.

And you do.  But this time you speak in a calm voice.  Every word is clear.  You even hear what you are saying.  With words you have chosen to share this moment in your life.

Fear.
Pain.
Sorrow.
Anger.
Sadness.

Whatever it is.  There is a word for it.

A living Word.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1:14)

His name is Jesus.

The Word that answers every problem.  Solves every situation.

Now take a deep breath.  Tell Him.  It will be alright.

Now.  Feel better ….

Of course you do.

Because when you Use Your Words – the words that line up with His Word, then you will find the peace that surpasses all understanding in all situations.
