This One Thing I Do

val's musings Mar 30, 2021

Oftentimes we are so busy doing a million things that if we were to stop long enough to think about what it is we are doing, we might be perplexed to know Why?

Why are you doing what you’re doing?
Did God tell you to do that?

Did you even ask Him what you are supposed to be doing?

When you come into the kingdom of God, the Holy Spirit seals you and gives you purpose for your new life in Christ through certain gifts and talents.  And that purpose has an assignment attached to it.

So what is your assignment?  What rings true for you?

Not, what do you like doing – but rather, what do you do that gives you joy, jumps out of you to do, happens without you thinking, makes you frustrated or angry or prayerful about - that no matter what - you will continue to do?

That’s the assignment.  That’s the one thing.

And it will really be one thing.

Because if you try to do all 50 things or even 10 things that come to mind or that you like doing, you will wear yourself out doing a pretty good job at most of your list, but more than likely a lousy job at the one thing God called you to do.
So think about it.

You might need to really take some time and meditate on this, especially if you are one of those people doing a million different things.

And perhaps even all of your interests can be tied back to one thing.

What is it?  Have you figured it out?

If not, there is One who can tell you.

He says to Call unto me and I will tell you great and marvelous things you do not know.   (Jer 33:3)

Ask Him.

He knows the plans He has for your life. (Jer 29:11)

Before you were formed in your mother’s womb He said he knew you. (Jer 1:5)

Before you ever came to be His eyes saw your unformed body. (Ps 139:16)

All the days ordained for your life were written in His book before one of them came to be. (Ps 139:16)

These are scriptures I had to keep coming back to because I was one of those people who liked a lot of things, did many things well, but could never drill it down to one thing.

Until one day.

When it all became clear.

Writing.

Whether they be stories.  Or tag lines.  Or brochures.  Or websites.  Or articles.  Or plays.  Or whatever.

I liked writing.  And usually it would just spring from my thoughts.  Or rather His thoughts running through my mind.

About something that just happened.  Or should have happened.

About your mother.  Or brother.  Your job.  Your bills.  Your life.

Write it down.

Make it plain.

So that others would run with it.  (Hab 2:2)

Yes.  Others would run with the words I had written because I was doing the one thing I was supposed to do.

Not mentoring.  Or working on the city council.  Or grants management.  Or decorating.  Or leading that group.

At least not as a principle thing.

Because if it did not involve me writing something about something I was not going to be fulfilled.

So I went back to the drawing board and I started to write.

Again.

And it flowed.

Oh how it flowed.

The words just sprinted out of my hands onto the keyboard onto that screen and into my future.

Into my purpose.

The place where I belong.

Home.

With Him.

Speaking to my heart.

Revealing all the issues that have lain dormant, waiting to come out.

To play.

To cry.

To be free.

So you can be free.

That’s my gift.  My talent. My purpose.

What’s yours?

What is that one thing for you?

When you find it – Do it!

Then it will all make sense.
